Inspection

You may believe that now your vehicle is clean our work is complete? Well this is where our technical detailing work just begins!

We now need to asses the condition, integrity and originality of your paintwork to determine the correct process and most beneficial form of improvement. This stage is absolutely critical and must be done correctly and thoroughly You would always check the depth and conditions of a swimming pool before diving in right?

Although clean and decontaminated; the surface of the paintwork is likely to be graced with one or many of the following compromising defects swirl marks, tiny scratches, marring and etching caused by industrial fall out, bird lime and acid rain. These defects can sometimes be hidden by other defects or only visible in direct sunlight. We use the most up to date light sources perfectly matched to direct sunlight to highlight defects and show the finish in its true condition. Fig 1 shows the use of our 3m PPS Sun Gun; utilising an element matched to replicate sunlight perfectly seeking out and highlighting defects.

At OFF YOUR MARKS we use our extensive range of accurate professional tools and equipment to safely address the problem of paintwork defects. The paint gauges we use give a highly accurate measurement of paint thickness right down to 1 micron (one thousandth of a millimetre) on any type of bodywork, be it steel, aluminium, GRP or PU. Fig 2 shows one of our Ultrasonic paint thickness gauges measuring the thickness of the paint and clear coat on a fibreglass bodied sports car. Once batches of readings are collected we can then upload them to view in graphical format as shown in Fig 3.

Some defects can often be written off by others as needing a re-spray or in truth beyond their scope of confidence and ability. We are able to look at paint and defects up to 200x closer than the naked eye and make an informed decision often being able to resurrect the surface and save you money with the added benefit of maintaining the originality of the paint finish. We use a PC based microscope to closely inspect the damaged surface as shown in Fig 4. The image is clearly displayed on our laptop giving an exceptionally clear and accurate insight of the defect as seen in Fig 5

Once our thorough inspection process is complete, we will then take the appropriate course of action to remedy the surface and correct the condition. This is explained in our paint correction page.
